Here is a slideshow from photos taken of the action in the Friends of South Amboy Benefit Game between crosstown rivals, South Amboy HS and Cardinal McCarrick. The Eagles of McCarrick broke away from a 15-13 first quarter lead with a 21-7 surge in the second for a 36-20 lead with 1:35 remaining in the first half. However, over the next 6:56 spanning the end of the second and much of the third, South Amboy responded with a 25-5 surge of its own to take a 45-41 lead with 2:39 left in the third.

From that point on through the end of regulation and overtime, there were 8 lead changes and 5 ties with neither team having a lead bigger than 4 points. McCarrick eventually emerged victorious in the extra session by outscoring South Amboy, 9 to 5 for the 74-70 win. Joe Fruncillo led all scorers with 31 points for South Amboy while teammate Steve Herdman chipped in with 19 points and Nick Kales added 8. Cardinal McCarrick had a more balanced attack with four players scoring in double figures and two others scoring 9 points each.

The Eagles were led by Sky Harris who had a team high 24 points including 12 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. St. Joseph’s transfer, Keyshawn Roach added 12 points while Aaron Lewis and freshman, Ryan O’Leary chipped in with 10 points. Fellow frosh Pop Brown and Manny Warren each contributed with 9. It was the second year in a row that both teams went to overtime. McCarrick won last year’s game as well.
