Here are highlights from the JV game between East Brunswick and St. Joseph’s at the Bird Cage in Metuchen. The Junior Bears and Junior Falcons went to overtime before we got a winner. St. Joseph’s looked like it was going to run away with the victory as it finished the third with a 7-0 run including two scores by sophomore Bryce Layne and a three point play by Mike Granda for a 39-29 lead.
However, East Brunswick rallied to tie the game and force overtime with a 20-10 showing in the final period. The Junior Bears opened the period with an 8-2 run, and then continued to rally with two threes by junior Nick Fudali to pull EB within a basket with 2:10 left. East Brunswick then tied the game on a layup with 45.4 seconds left in regulation, and had a chance to win the game, but Fudali’s three point try in the waning seconds hit back iron.
In the overtime, the game continued to be very intense and competitive. With EB leading 54-53, Granda banked in a floater with 26.3 seconds left to put the Junior Falcons on top, 55-54. Then, after a timeout by the Junior Bears with 13.6 seconds left, Justin Sewnarine scored on a last second bank shot to give EB the 56-55 win.
