GMC Hoops Capsule–South Amboy vs. Bishop Ahr–Raritan Bay Summer League–June 3, 2014

Guvs Edge Ahr Behind Scoring Trio of Ford, O’Leary, and Kudelka

SOUTH RIVER, NJ–In the opener of the Tuesday night doubleheader at the 2014 Raritan Bay Summer League being held this year at South River High School, the Guvs of South Amboy got double figure scoring from three players to build an eight point lead late in the second half, and then hung on to defeat Bishop Ahr, 56-52.

Both Kiere Ford, and Cardinal McCarrick transfer, Ryan O’Leary each had a game high 17 points while Sean Kudelka added 14 points in the victory. Ford had 8 points in the first half, and 9 points in the second while O’Leary had 9 points in the first half, and 8 in the second. Kudelka had 7 points in both the first and second half. The Guvs had 8 three pointers in the contest, and outscored the Trojans by a margin of 24-6 from beyond the arc.

BGA had more two point field goals (19-14), and had more points from the foul line (9-8), but the Guvs shot 8 of 12 for 67 from the charity stripe versus a 9 of 15 effort by the Trojans for 60 percent. South Amboy committed fewer fouls as well (12-19). The Guvs jumped out to a 34-30 halftime lead, and increased that edge to 56-48 with under a minute to play before coming away with the four point win. Lots of changes happening with the Guvs this off-season.

After putting together a Cinderella run in the 2014 Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament by becoming the lowest seed ever to make the quarterfinals as the 24th seed, South Amboy is losing top players such as Joe Fruncillo, Steve Herdman, Nick Kales, and Dan Murphy. In addition, head coach, Lenny Reyes stepped down opening up the position this spring. Two notable names in South Amboy basketball lore are among the candidates vying for the job: Jesse Holovacko, the former JV and assistant coach at Cardinal McCarrick, and John Zammit, a member of the 2008 South Amboy squad that won the school’s only division crown in boys basketball, who went on to coach JV at the school under Mark Truhan.
