GMC Hoops Game Notes—Scrimmage—Manville @ South River—December 12, 2014

SOUTH RIVER, NJ—On Friday afternoon, GMC Hoops traveled out to South River High School to take in action from a scrimmage between two Group I schools, Manville of the Skyland Conference’s Valley Division, and South River of the Greater Middlesex Conference’s Gold Division. After both teams tied at 13-13 in the first quarter, the Rams took control of the scrimmage with a 23-13 showing in the second thanks to 19 combined points by Sean Darrar and Antonio Martinez. South River continued to pull away from there by winning the third and fourth quarters by 13-11 and 17-9 margins respectively to outscored Manville by a margin of 53-33 over the final three periods for a 66-46 victory. Below are game notes from the action:

First Quarter

5:28—Arrive—South River leads 7-4.

2:30—Manville calls timeout after putting together a 7-4 run including a three pointer to tie the game at 11-11. Sean Darrar accounted for all four of South River’s points during this stretch.

0:00–First qtr ends in a 13-13 tie. Both teams got scores in the final 1:02. Darrar had a three attempt go off iron as time ran out.


Second Quarter

6:54 left in second qtr and Manville calls timeout with a 5-3 lead. Antonio Martinez has all 3 points for the Rams.

6:27 left in first half and Manville calls another timeout after Martinez hits a three, and then scores on a layup off a steal for a 5-0 run and an 8-5 lead.

5:16 left in first half and South River gets a three from the right side of the key by Darrar for an 11-5 lead.

2:34 left in the first half and Manville calls timeout after a jumper by Darrar from just inside the arc on the right side for a 17-9 lead. South River on a 6-4 run.

2:00 left in the first half and South River calls timeout after Darrar nets two fts for a 19-11 lead.

1.3 secs left in first half and Manville calls timeout with South River leading 23-13 after scoring 4 of the last 6 points.

0:00–Reached the half at varsity scrimmage with South River leads 23-13. In the JV scrimmage, South River jumped out to an 8-0 lead over the first 2:56 of the quarter, but then Manville scored the last 9 points to gain a 9-8 edge in the frame. Mario Nigro is not playing for South River varsity due to wrist injury suffered during football season. Should be back soon.


Third Quarter

6:23 left in third and Manville has a 4-2 lead after a high arching jumper from left baseline by Mustangs.

1:27 left in third and South River ties it at 9-9 after a three from the left wing by Darrar that capped a 7-5 run by the Rams to tie the game.

1:00—Manville scores on a basket for an 11-9 lead.

0:00–South River ends third with four unanswered points including a steal for layup by Darrar for a 13-11 edge in qtr.


Fourth Quarter

6:32 left in the fourth and Manville is up 2-0 on a pair of fts. Timeout on the floor.

4:56 left in varsity scrimmage and South River calls timeout after taking a 5-2 lead on a three pointer and another score by Martinez.

1:39 left and Manville pulls within 15-9 on a three from the top of the key. Mustangs trey ended a 15-4 tear by the Rams including scores by Darrar and Martinez.

0:00–Scrimmage ends with South River winning final period by the score of 17-9. Rams got the final points of the period for the 8 point edge. Rams won three of the quarters with the first period ending in a tie. South River outscored Manville by a 53-33 margin over the last three periods for a 66-46 edge in scrimmage.
