Red Division Off To Very Competitive Start

Five Of First Six Division Games Decided By Seven Points Or Less

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–The first week of action in 2014-15 GMC Red play is in the books with the division living up to pre-season expectations that it is pretty wide open.  Of the first six Red Division games played this season, five of them were decided by three points or less.  The only game that wasn’t that close was the opening night game between top ranked St. Joseph’s and fifth ranked South Brunswick, which was won by the Falcons, 53-34.

Even the Falcons-Vikings game was close for a while with South Brunswick trailing 13-11 midway through the second quarter, and 21-15 at the half after the Falcons closed the second on an 8-4 run.  St. Joe’s wasn’t able to break the game open until the second half when Breein Tyree sparked a 17-4 tear to start the third with a monster one handed dunk.  Perth Amboy, which is 0-2 could very well be 2-0 with a 52-50 opening night loss at home against Old Bridge, and a 63-56 defeat to East Brunswick on December 23rd.  North Brunswick is 1-1, but could easily be 0-2 or 2-0 with an opening night loss to EB at home (55-53) and a three point win over Piscataway two nights ago (36-33).

EB is 2-0 thanks to close wins over North Brunswick and Perth Amboy, but could easily be 0-2.  Old Bridge is 1-1 with a two point win on the road at Amboy, and then a six point loss to South Brunswick at home.  The close games in the Red early on are an indication that this division is pretty wide open although St. Joseph’s looked very impressive on opening night, and could have more of an edge over the other teams in the division then earlier thought.  The other six teams in division have all brought back some talent from last year, and either have good talent coming up from JV, freshmen, or both.  Let’s take a look at these close calls in the GMC Red in the first week of play.
