Here are highlights from the final 10:11 of action in the GMCT Round of 16 game between 14th seeded Sayreville and 3rd seeded Cardinal McCarrick in South Amboy. Boosted by hot three point shooting in the third period when the Bombers scored 24 points including 8 points by sophomore Jayson DeMild, and 7 each from seniors Mike Valentin and Jehyve Floyd, Sayreville turned a 20-19 halftime edge into a 44-35 leading moving into the fourth.
After Sayreville opened the fourth with the first two points, McCarrick rallied with 9 straight points including a conventional three point play by NyQuan Combs with 2:08 remaining to pull within two at 46-44. The Eagles, which lost their second straight game after winning 19 in a row to open the season, weren’t able to get any closer though as Sayreville got two huge free throws from Valentin down the stretch to seal the upset 49-46 win.
DeMild (16 points), Valentin (15 points), and Floyd (14 points) accounted for 45 of the Bombers 49 points in the win while McCombs led McCarrick with a game high 21 points including four threes and a conventional three point play.
