St. Joseph’s Standouts Battle and Tyree Selected to Play in North-South All-Star Game

Falcons’ Duo Chosen to Play in Annual All-Star Game at Rider This Sunday

St. Joseph’s standout, Tyus Battle skies for his second dunk of the game against Notre Dame in the 2016 Non-Public A South Semifinals on March 8th. Battle and teammate Bree Tyree were recently selected to play in the NJSCA North-South All-Star Game.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ–On Sunday afternoon, the NJSCA North-South All-Star Basketball Game will take place, and the GMC will have two players representing the conference. Both Tyus Battle and Bree Tyree of St. Joseph’s High School were selected to play in the end of season showcase, which will be held at Rider University. Battle, who will be attending Syracuse this fall, finished his career with 1,508 points while Tyree, who will be attending Mississippi this fall, ended his career with 1,221 points.

Battle, who played his first three years at Gill St. Bernard’s, scored 535 points this season, or an average of 19.1 points per game. Battle was recently chosen as the New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year. Meanwhile, Tyree, who attended Rutgers Prep his freshman year, scored 455 points this season, or an average of 16.2 points per game. The duo led the Falcons to their third straight GMC Red title, and 6th in the past 7 years. They also helped St. Joseph’s reclaim the GMCT Boys title, the sixth in the last seven seasons. St. Joe’s also returned to the Non-Public A South title game for the fourth time in the past five years.

Both Battle and Tyree have ties to other famous family members. Battle is the son of Gary Battle, who starred at Colonia from 1983-1987, and scored a total of 1,120 points, which ranks fifth on the all time list at the school. He helped lead the Patriots to the 1985 Central Jersey Group 3 Championship as well as a GMCT Final Four berth in 1987. Battle also has a younger brother, Khalif, who also played varsity for St. Joseph’s this season as a freshman. Meanwhile, Tyree, is the younger brother of Jevon Tyree, who was a football and basketball standout at South Brunswick. The elder Tyree, later put more emphasis on football, and eventually ended up at Rutgers. Tyree is also the nephew of former New York Giants wide receiver, David Tyree, who is known for his remarkable catch in Super Bowl XLII against the New England Patriots.

On the girls side, Piscataway’s Kendrea Williams was selected to play in the girls game. Williams led the Chiefs to a share of first place in the GMC Red this past season with eventual GMCT Girls champion, East Brunswick and South Brunswick. The Chiefs reached the GMCT Quarterfinals before losing to South Brunswick, and was defeated in the semifinals of the North Jersey Section 2 Group 4 State Tournament by second seeded East Orange (41-35). The Lady Chiefs finished their season at 18-7. The NJSCA North-South All-Star Games will take place on Sunday, March 20th at Rider University with the boys game starting at 12:00 PM followed by the girls game at 2:30 PM.
