South River and Jayhawks HS Squads Edged in Close Contests

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ–On Monday night, GMC Hoops headed over to South Amboy Middle/High School to take in Opening Night of the 2016 Raritan Bay Summer League. The Lange Dog Machine was not in operation, and there were problems with the new scoreboard, but league co-directors Gary Lange and Tom Reilly got the league off to a great start with three very competitive games.

In the two games involving high school teams, South River and the Central Jersey Jayhawks, which sports a team with players from Bishop Ahr, J.P. Stevens, and Sayreville, both fell in close games. South River trailed The Heat JV by nine at 26-17 with less than 9 minutes remaining before rallying with 11 straight points to take a two point lead with under two minutes to play, but the Heat scored the last three to pull out a one point win.

The Jayhawks jumped out to a 10-4 lead over the first 6:47 of its contest with Colts Neck, but then gave way to an 11-2 tear by the Colts until Bishop Ahr’s Sean Kudelka converted a traditional three point play with 1:13 to go in the first half to tie the game at 15-15 going into the intermission. Kudelka then added another layup during a 7-1 spurt early on in the second half to turn a 17-15 deficit into a 22-18 lead with 14:05 to play. However, Colts Neck put together a pivotal 7-0 run including a three pointer for a 25-22 lead, and managed to hold off the Jayhawks for a three point win.
