2016 Colonia JV Summer League–Playoff Results–Opening Round

Colonia, Old Bridge, and Roselle Catholic Advance to Semis

COLONIA, NJ–On Monday afternoon, GMC Hoops traveled over to Colonia High School to take in the action at the 2016 Colonia JV Summer League Playoffs. In the opening round of this year’s playoffs, Colonia, Old Bridge, J.F. Kennedy, Spotswood, and Middlesex were all in action.

In the first game, seventh seeded Middlesex used the three point shot to go toe to toe with second seeded Roselle Catholic, and actually had a 9-8 lead with 15:24 remaining in the first half. However, the Junior Lions were too strong, especially with their pressure defense forcing turnovers for layups, and their big men attacking the offensive glass for offensive boards and putbacks. Roselle Catholic ended up outscoring Middlesex 31-2 for the balance of the first half to take a 39-11 lead at the break, and cruised to the semifinals.

The second game was much more competitive as sixth seeded Spotswood took on third seeded Colonia in another quarterfinal contest. The game was back and forth throughout the first half with neither team having a lead bigger than five points while there were several lead changes and ties. Trailing 17-14, Colonia connected on a three pointer from the left wing to tie the score with over a two minutes left in the first half, but then Spotswood’s Matt Fuzesi scored on a layup off a drive down the left lane with about a minute remaining in the half for a 19-17 lead at the break.

Colonia would find a way to get the win and a date in the semifinals against second seeded Roselle Catholic by outscoring Spotswood by a margin of 34-27 over the final 20 minutes. In the third and final quarterfinal of the day, fourth seeded and defending league champion, Old Bridge took on fifth seeded J.F. Kennedy, and the Junior Knights advanced to the semifinals for the second straight year with a 13 point win over the Junior Mustangs. Below are all the scores from opening round playoff action at the 2016 Colonia JV Summer League on Monday:
