Jayhawks Defeat EB Tech and Roselle; UC Wins in Wild Ending

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ–On Friday night, GMC Hoops traveled out to South Amboy Middle-High School to take in at least part of all four games at the 2016 Raritan Bay Summer League on Friday night. Two teams with players from the GMC were in action as EB Tech took on the Jayhawks at 5:30 PM and then the Jayhawks played a second game against Roselle at 7:30 PM

The first game was the least competitive of the four contests on Friday at Raritan Bay as the Jayhawks rolled past EB Tech. The Tigers got off to a good start with a layup off the opening tip, and then a three pointer for a 5-2 lead at the 18:30 mark. However, the Jayhawks scored 15 of the next 16 points to take a 15-6 lead, and never looked back in a 34 point victory.

In the second contest, the Jersey Shore Breakers and Old Bridge battled down to the wire before the Breakers pulled away late for a five point win. Leading 35-34 with 1:31 to play, the Breakers got two layups in the last 30 seconds including one off a key steal to come away with the win. Old Bridge had several chances to score down the stretch, but were unable to convert.

The Central Jersey Jayhawks returned for their 7:30 PM match-up against Roselle, and after both teams could only managed two points each over the first 7:11, but then combined for 31 over the last 12:49. The Jayhawks, which got several blocked shots from big men, Sean Kudelka and Kieran Hodder, got the lion’s share of the points with a 22-9 showing including a 20-6 surge over a 10:03 span.

Roselle would battle back though with a 20-9 tear over the initial 10:59 to close the gap to two points at 33-31 with just over nine minutes to play, but couldn’t get any closer as the Jayhawks led by Kudelka, Hodder, Alex Santiago, and Derek Astarita pulled away with a 15-7 spurt the rest of the way for a 10 point victory. Roselle would experience even worse heartbreak in the finale of the night against Union Catholic.

In a back and forth battle, Union Catholic turned a 13-11 deficit into a 35-20 lead with a 24-7 surge over a span of 10:09. Roselle would respond though by scoring the last six points of the first half, and then 13 of the first 17 points of the second half to tie the game at 39-39 with seven minutes remaining. UC then took the lead again at 43-39 by scoring the next four points including a three point play at the five minute mark.

Roselle chipped away again though by scoring 7 of the next 9 points over a span of 3:06 including a layup at the 1:54 mark for a 46-45 lead. Union Catholic answered by drawing a foul, and making both free throws for a 47-46 edge at the 1:35 mark. Roselle made one of two from the line with 1:18 remaining in regulation for a 47-47 tie, and had a couple chances to take the lead, but missed a pair of foul shots at the 50 second mark, and then UC drew a charge with 18 seconds left.

The Vikings of Union Catholic then drew a foul with 8.1 seconds to play, and made both free throws for a 49-47 lead only to have Roselle tie the game back up at 49-49 with a pair of foul shots with 3.6 seconds left. Finally, Union Catholic inbounded the ball from its end line, dribbled the ball upcourt along the sideline nearest the team benches and scorer’s table, and threw up a long three attempt while falling to the ground, and it went in as time expired for the three point win.
