South Amboy Pulls Away from Dunellen in OT, 65-57

Guvs Outscore Destroyers 13-5 in Extra Session for Win

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ–Coming off a loss to last place East Brunswick Tech on Wednesday, South Amboy was looking to rebound in its GMC Gold Division clash against Dunellen on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Dunellen Destroyers, which lost by only one on Wednesday to a Piscataway Tech team that has played much better as of late, and rallied from 15 points down with three minutes to play to defeat Koinonia Academy of Plainfield, were looking to continue their positive momentum.

Both teams played a spirited game that needed an extra quarter of basketball to decide a winner. In that overtime period, South Amboy outscored Dunellen by a margin of 13-5 to post a 65-57 victory. Alan Kazar led the Governors with a game high 24 points along with 9 rebounds.

Kyle Gasiewski chipped in with 14 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds. Steve Pena also scored in double figures for the Guvs with 11 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds while Isaiah Munoz contributed with 8 points and 2 boards. All six players that got in the game for South Amboy scored.

Oscar Caballero led Dunellen in a losing cause with 23 points while freshman, Tyje’ Kelton chipped in with 18 points. Forward Chris Rouland added 9 points. Five different players scored for the Destroyers in the contest. Each team outscored the other in two of the four quarters played.

Both teams combined for 14 three pointers with South Amboy getting the majority as it outscored Dunellen by a margin of 24-18 from long distance. The Destroyers enjoyed a 34-28 edge in points scored within the arc while the Guvs had a 13-5 edge in points scored at the foul line.

As a team, South Amboy collected 25 rebounds and 15 assists. Trailing 14-9 after one period, Dunellen outscored South Amboy by a margin of 30-23 over the middle two periods to take a 39-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Governors then rallied with a 15-13 showing in the fourth to knot the game at 52-52 and force overtime.

With the victory, South Amboy improved to 5-8 overall including a 4-5 mark in the Gold Division and a 4-6 record in the GMC. Meanwhile, Dunellen dropped to 5-8 on the season including a 3-6 mark in divisional play, and a 3-7 record in conference. Both teams return to action next week.

South Amboy will host Piscataway Tech on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM, and then travel to Wardlaw-Hartridge for another GMC Gold Division clash on Friday evening at 5:30 PM. Meanwhile, Dunellen will host the Academy of Urban Leadership on Monday night at 7:30 PM and Highland Park on Wednesday at 5:30 PM before traveling to Timothy Christian for a contest on Friday night at 6:30 PM.
