GMC Hoops Highlights–February 4, 2017–So. Brunswick @ St. Joseph’s–Red Division Clash

Here are highlights from the action in top ranked St. Joseph’s win over third ranked South Brunswick in a GMC Red Division Showdown on the first Saturday in February 2017.

It was Showdown Saturday in the GMC Red Division as third ranked South Brunswick traveled to St. Joseph’s for an afternoon clash with the top ranked Falcons for the GMC Red Division crown.

Led by Letrell West, who scored a game high 18 points, St. Joseph’s jumped out to a 20-9 lead early in the second quarter. South Brunswick rallied though with a 13-2 tear that included a three from Ryan Moran to tie the game at 22-22 with 3:03 left in the first half.

St. Joseph’s would take the lead for good though with a 7-0 run to end the second period that included a three by freshman Tyree Taganeca-Ford (13 points), and a two handed jam by Malachi Walker (13 points) off a dish from West for a 29-22 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw the Falcons increase their advantage to 46-28 with a 17-6 showing that included another three by Tyree Ford at the 5:33 mark, a trey by Mike Granda (9 points) at the 5:19 mark, a score by freshman Richard Greaves (11 points) with 3:31 remaining in the third, a three point play by West at the 1:50 mark, and a Walker two handed jam off a dish by Granda to end the period.

South Brunswick had a run in the fourth quarter that made things interesting for a while, but couldn’t get closer than 10 points as St. Joseph’s clinched the GMC Red Division title for the fourth straight year, and for the 7th time in the last 8 years.

Mike Ugarte led South Brunswick in a losing cause with 11 points while Tavian Alford chipped in with 9, and Ryan Moran, Chris James, and Kunal Thakral each added 6. South Brunswick outscored Joes by a margin of 30-9 from three point range, but the Falcons had a 46-18 edge in points scored within the arc, and made 9 of 12 at the line while the Vikings only made 4 of 5.
