GMC Hoops Game Notes–Teaneck vs. St. Joseph’s–Hoop Group Tip-Off Classic–December 16, 2012

WEST ORANGE, NJ–In the GMC Hoops featured matchup of the day at the 2012 Hoop Group Tip-Off Classic, St. Joseph’s took on Teaneck in a rematch of last year’s Tip-Off Classic contest won by the Highwaymen, 53-49. This year, the game went to overtime before St. Joe’s finally prevailed, 67-66. The Falcons were led by Kentucky bound and game MVP, Karl Towns with 18 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks, but it wasn’t easy. The Falcons, which went 0 of 7 at the line in the last 58 seconds of regulation, had a 58-56 lead and the ball with 14.4 seconds left after a block by Towns. However, Wade Baldwin misfired on two free throws with 13 seconds left.

Then, after getting an offensive rebound, and drawing a foul, Marques Townes missed both his free throws with 8.4 seconds to go, and then Towns himself fell prey to the foul shooting woes by missing the first of two from the line with 7 seconds left before the Falcons were called for a lane violation. Teaneck took advantage as game MVP, Shaakir Lindsey, who scored 16 points, drove upcourt, and dished to Myles McLeod for a layup to tie the game at 58-58 as the final horn sounded. In the overtime though, the Falcons were able to pull away behind the efforts of Baldwin, an Immaculata transfer, who had a game high 27 points, scored five points in the extra session while Towns and Cardinal McCarrick transfer, Marques Townes, added two each. Teaneck, which was led by Joel Hernandez with 19 points, netted a three with one second left to close the gap to one, but Jimbo Long inbounded the ball to Baldwin, and the clock ran out with the Falcons hanging on for their first win of the 2012-13 season.
