Red Division Resurgence In 2010-11

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–Historically, the GMC Red has been the toughest division in the Greater Middlesex Conference. With teams like St. Joseph’s, Piscataway, Perth Amboy, and East Brunswick, the division has always been the most difficult one to compete in year in and year out. However, the past several seasons, the division has been down. Outside of teams such as St. Joe’s, P-Way, and EB, there haven’t been that many successful teams. Not until this year.

With a plethora of junior talent developing, teams such as St. Joseph’s, Piscataway, East Brunswick, Perth Amboy, and South Brunswick have plenty of depth. These teams are not only knocking each other off, but they are also defeating teams in the other divisions of the GMC. As of the end of play on Friday night, the GMC Red was a combined 9-6 against teams in other divisions of the conference. In addition, the division is the best of all four divisions against non-conference competition with an 11-7 record. Teams in the Red doing well in crossover contests are: East Brunswick (3-0) and Perth Amboy (2-0). Red Division squads excelling against non-conference teams are St. Joseph’s (4-0), Piscataway (3-2), and Colonia (2-1).

The race in the Red Division is very tight. Four teams are within a game of each other with EB and St. Joe’s tied for the division lead at 7-2 while South Brunswick is third at 6-2, and P-Way is fourth at 6-3. Even though it has dropped off a bit, Amboy is not too far behind at 4-4. In the 25 previous years of the GMC, the Red Division has won the most GMCT championships with 12. The White Division is second with 8, and the Blue is third with five. No team from the GMC Gold has ever won a conference title.
