St. Joseph’s Wins Second Consecutive GMC Hoops Trophy

Falcons Able To Hang On As McCarrick’s Late Run Falls Short

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–For the second straight year, the St. Joseph’s Falcons have won the GMC Hoops Trophy. In nine games seen by the site this year, the Falcons were 8-1, which gave them 15 points to top the standings. St. Joe’s withstood a fierce challenge by the Cardinal McCarrick Eagles in one of the closest GMC Hoops Trophy races ever.

GMC Hoops saw Cardinal McCarrick 14 times this past season, which is the most the site has seen any team in one season ever. The Eagles had a tough road to have a chance to win the trophy. Not only did it need to beat St. Anthony’s in the Non-Public B State Championship, but it would have had to win its opening round game in the Tournament of Champions. Each team gets two points for a victory, and minus one point for a loss. If the Eagles had surprised the nationally top ranked Friars, and then lost in the T of C, they would have ended up tied with St. Joe’s with 15 points. However, the Falcons defeated McCarrick head to head in the GMCT Semifinals (47-42), and had a better winning percentage in games covered by the site.

St. Joseph’s became the third team to win its second GMC Hoops Trophy. The Falcons are the second team to win back to back GMC Hoops Trophies. Other GMC teams that have won two trophies are McCarrick (2003 and 2005) and Piscataway (2008 and 2009). Over the past two season’s, the Falcons have compiled a 14-2 record in games covered by GMC Hoops. Since the 2007-08 season, St. Joe’s has gone 21-7 in games covered by the web site.
