GMC Hoops Game Notes–Larson Ford vs. Sterns Trailer—Jersey Shore Basketball League—July 7, 2015

WALL TOWNSHIP, NJ—In the first game of the Tuesday night doubleheader at the 2015 Jersey Shore Basketball League, Stern’s Trailer jumped out to a 10-6 lead behind three pointers from Larry Smith and Cory Soanes, and built up a 34-20 advantage early in the second quarter. However, behind the steady play by point guard, Mike Gordon, current head coach at Piscataway Tech and former Plainfield standout, Colonia’s Jordan McDaniel and Linden’s Jonathan Jones took off as they spearheaded a 89-63 surge over the last 29:09 for the 109-97 victory. Below are game notes from the action:

First Quarter

7:03–ST–jumps out to a 10-6 lead on threes by former South River and Matawan standout, Larry Smith and Matawan’s Cory Soanes along with an alleyoop dunk by Darnell Wilks.

5:53–LF–on a 7-0 run including layup by Colonia’s Jordan McDaniel for a 13-10 lead.

3:23–LF–leads 15-14 after score by Smith answered dunk by Colonia’s Jordan McDaniel.

2:12–ST–on a 10-2 tear thanks to a three and a putback by Soanes for a 24-17 lead.

1:41–LF–timeout after another ST three for a 27-19 lead.

0:0–ST leads 29-20 after a breakaway layup by ST’s Jerome Hubbard and one of two fts by former Weequahic standout Keon Lawrence.


Second Quarter

9:09–ST–scores first 5 points of period including a three by Jerome Hubbard for a 34-20 lead.

7:07–LF–pulls within six at 36-30 after three by Pway Tech head coach and former Plainfield standout Mike Gordon caps 10-2 run.

4:43–ST–timeout after three by Kareem Collins and layup by Gordon gives LF a 10-4 run to tie game at 40-40.

1:45–ST–rallies from a 47-44 deficit with a 7-0 run on a three by Blake Hamilton, a layup by Smith and a reverse layup by Soanes for a 51-47 lead.

0:00–ST–misses three as time runs out after LF ties game at 51-51 on two layups by McDaniel including one with 36 seconds left in the half.


Third Quarter

7:38–ST–timeout after LF starts half on a 9-2 run including a three by Willie Idris and layups by Gordon and Collins for a 60-53 lead.

3:39–LF–Dan Singleton hits three from top of the key to end a 5-0 run by ST for a 71-61 lead.

0:00–LF–ends qtr with layup by Linden’s Jonathan Jones off drive and dish by Lawrence to cap a 10-6 run for an 81-67 lead.


Fourth Quarter

6:17–ST–layup by Smith ends 13-8 LF run highlighted by dunks from Lawrence and Jones for a 94-77 lead.

2:04–ST–timeout after layup and foul for Union’s Dion Nesmith to close gap to 101-92.
