Here are some highlights from the second half and overtime of Ridge’s 44-41 victory over St. Peter’s Prep of Jersey City on day two of the 2015 Summer Primetime Shootout held at Trenton Catholic Academy.
This was the most competitive and riveting contest of the day. Max Mahoney scored the first 4 points of the game and Ridge as a team scored the game’s first 9 points by the 13:46 mark en route to an 11-1 lead before St. Peter’s Prep called timeout at the 11:00 mark. However, the Marauders from Jersey City fought back with a 16-5 tear the rest of the half to trail by only four at 20-16.
Despite Ridge getting all six of its points to start the half from Mahoney, the Devils only had one field goal over the first 9:02 as the Marauders opened the 2nd half on a 9-6 run to pull within one at 26-25 at the 10:58 mark. Over the next 8:37, St. Peter’s Prep continued to surge with a 12-6 run including 8 unanswered on two threes and a follow for a 37-32 lead with 2:21 remaining in regulation.
Mahoney then scored the next five including a three from the left wing with 1:19 left for a 37-37 tie. The Devils had a chance to win at the line with 12.1 seconds left, but misses both FTs. St. Peter’s Prep was unable to score and the game went to overtime tied at 37-37.
In the extra session, Ridge scored the first 5 points including a three at the 1:03 mark and two free throws with 40.3 seconds to go for a 42-37 lead and then got some insurance in the form of a putback by Mahoney with 14.8 seconds left for the 44-41 victory.
